Here's an assortment of programs that have a permanent spot on my desktop. This page is pure opinion. But I recommend all of these from experience, so it could be worse. My general approach is not to pay for software, ever... unless it's a computer game. If I can customize it, it gets bonus points. If it's "Web 2.0," I have problems with it.
A time capsule-ish fork of Firefox with purely usable interface |
Thunderbird fork which fixes some bugs |
Formerly known as Gaim. Lets me have just one program running for all IM needs. Pretty solid. I dislike some of the icons it uses, but I've changed those myself. |
Simple free combination WYSIWYG and raw HTML web page designer. |
Nice and easy to use and stores passwords and starting directories for the handful of FTP sites I use. |
Useful, pretty well known, and few, if any major problems with it. (e.g. targetting by MAFIAA) |
Nice and small player that can be skinned. Also works well with the media buttons on my laptop |
It can play almost any video file. It can also do captions, which is a great plus for me. |
Practically free forever, considering how infrequently I need to use it. |
Free, capable, and a slippery learning curve. I've been using it for years, and it keeps getting better, so it's my default. |
Free and fairly easy to use. Has the rare stability problem, but I like it. I've used it for a few logos, and more importantly, for diagrams for lab reports and the like. |
Super fast, and can view any image, as well as good for quick cropping of screenshots, and such. |
